"I love, love love your use of mortification. Absolutely brilliant. I do prefer your second version. It's so simple, yet not. Just what I like about haiku."

Very clever!

Sad really. A horrible business with a dead soldier's mum being caught in the middle of British Prime Minister politics and the changed politics of the newspaper that first published this issue.

As Japanese senryu focuses on highlighting politics in contrast with Western senryu which is more social foibles, I felt senryu needed to be used for this unpleasant business.

I hope it doesn't come across as only clever.

It doesn't. The whole affair highlighted the stresses of the office. It is highly doubtful wheter the PM did anything but memorise a speech and sign his name.
