sun rises in the west
from a thousand reflected
suburban windows
slow ripples
on the still pond - like
stained glass

the Red Deer's
guttural roar - as if the
woods were on fire

the slurred landscape shifts -
I'm walking into grey

in the hollows
a pond cradled
in ice and snow
I walk into thick fog
and bring out a poem

at twilight
fields of blue snow -
glowing

across the garden
where I've retraced my steps
the snow remembers me
a frozen world cast in black and white
in the hush of a grey dawn -
snow is whispering
frost falling
like the soft paws of a cat
gently spreading
sunrise reveals
fields dissolved
with frost

this night
wrapped up in sleep
and fog pressing at my window
our fragile silence
framed by cannon fire and
a lonely bugle call
autumn twilight
even the gutters sing with
gusting tongues of fire
tonight I am waiting
for frost, bronzed leaves glazed white -
lining the streets
